Troubleshooting and FAQ

Common problems and how to fix them, on the app side as well as the server side.

The connection diagnostic

First of all: Settings → Application → Connection diagnostic. It tests your Internet, the server, Voxsen's central service and voice, then tells you where the problem comes from (your network, the server or Voxsen). The status of Voxsen's services can also be seen live on the status page.

I can't sign in

“No Voxsen server at this address”

Check the address (with :3000 if the server has no domain name) and that the server is on. Open the address in a browser: the page “This Voxsen server is running” should show up. If not, check with the person hosting the server (hosting guide).

Password or code rejected

The Voxsen account password is the same for every server; a server may also have an entry password (given by its managers). With two-factor authentication, the 6-digit code changes every 30 seconds: make sure your phone's clock is set to automatic time.

Lost phone (two-factor authentication)

Use one of your backup codes instead of the 6-digit code. Each code only works once; once signed in, turn two-factor authentication off and back on with the new phone.

Forgot your password

There's no email recovery yet. Keep your password in a password manager.

No sound or silent mic

  • Nobody can hear you: check whether the mic is muted (crossed-out button at the bottom left), whether the voice detection threshold is too high, or whether you're in push-to-talk.
  • Test your mic in Settings → Voice and audio (test with playback in your headset).
  • The mic doesn't react at all: Settings → Permissions; Windows must allow the mic for desktop apps.
  • You can't hear anyone: check deafen (crossed-out headset), the output device and the volume of each member (right-click → User volume).
  • “Voice connection lost”, or nobody can hear each other while chat works: the server is probably blocking the voice ports (UDP). See Open the ports.

Screen sharing: no sound or black picture

  • PC sound is only shared with an entire screen, not with a single window.
  • Black picture on some games or protected videos: share the entire screen rather than the window, or run the game in borderless windowed mode.
  • Stuttering: lower the quality when you start sharing (1080p or 720p, 30 frames per second).
  • Others have to click Watch: a stream is neither shown nor heard until someone watches it.

Updates

The app updates itself on launch. If an update stays stuck, fully close Voxsen (right-click its icon near the clock → Quit), start it again, or reinstall the latest version from voxsen.com/download: your settings and your session are kept.

Frequently asked questions

Is Voxsen free?

Yes: the app and the server kit are free, with no ads or subscription.

Who sees my messages?

A community's messages stay on its own server, hosted by its managers. Voxsen only keeps your account (email, username, profile) to connect you to all your servers.

Can I use Voxsen on Mac, Linux or my phone?

Not yet: the app is available for Windows. The server, however, installs on Windows or Linux.

How many people on a server?

A small PC or VPS (2 cores, 2 GB of RAM) is enough for around twenty people, video included. See Power and video quality.

How do I create my own server?

With the server kit, in about ten minutes: Hosting a server.
